Today's NYTimes: Coyote Hunting with Hounds

One Man's Controversial Sport

John Hardzog, a cattle rancher, uses trained greyhounds to hunt coyotes, a common pest for farmers. It's a practice that goes back generations, but is also opposed by some animal rights groups.
Pretty sympathetic portrayal of this rancher and of his hunting of coyotes.

  1. Cool - I'd seen that, but hadn't had time to read it. I tell you, the NYT is not an enemy of hunting - I've seen that paper do a lot of really even-handed stories over the past couple years.

I don't know that I'll ever be a fan of hunting with hounds, but it's nice to get some insight to what it is. Hardzog is right - most people don't have a clue.

  2. Not surprisingly, the Eye of Sauron has found the story. I see a new campaign in the works.

  3. We have a good number of coyote hounders here in Vermont. Our guys use hounds and then try to intercept they coyote as they cross a field for the shot. Needless to say there is a lot more running than shooting. One major benefit is coyotes are very wary of dogs and people in areas where they are hunted and also trapped. This makes for low incidents of human/coyote encounters. Thus we can live with a healthy population of coyotes, and they can do the same with humans.

  4. I know of a guy who is a real coyote hunter. He is one crazy SOB.
I think he may be the guy who observed that "if women didn't have (blanks)....there would be a bounty on them."
    Titillating to consider.
